MAMOU – The Hotel Cazan in Mamou is sponsoring a weekend conference, in the hopes of solving the cold case of a young mother who went missing in May of 1968, and a group of women is working to solve the fifty year mystery.
They’re calling themselves the Cajun FBI, and because of their thorough and tireless investigative work, the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Alice Marie Reeves may finally be revealed.
“She was living in Ville Platte, working in Mamou and brought a young baby to the baby sitter here in Mamou, and never returned,” says Camille Fontenot of the Hotel Cazam Outreach.
When human remains were discovered on a rural Evangeline Parish road in December, Fontenot and the women who make up the Cajun FBI went to work.
Adds Fontenot, “Whoever those bones are for, that’s going to be some interest for us because that’s here.”
While the remains are currently being studied by LSU Forensics, the Cajun investigative team believe that the remains could be those of Reeves.
“We decided maybe we could look into it,” explains Fontenot, “And we’ve had people galore calling in and asking us to continue this.”
Their efforts have included working with law enforcement and interviewing people throughout the Evangeline community, including family members of Reeves. This has only shown the light on more missing person cold cases, a not so rare occurrence for mid-20th century Cajun country.
“There was part of Mamou at one time and Evangeline parish that was a darker side,” says Fontenot, “And maybe this girl – maybe this is how we will get her back to her family.”
With only a few missing pieces left, the Cajun FBI is hoping that their missing persons conference at Hotel Cazan will bring enough people together to finally solve the mystery.
“Help us put the pieces to the puzzle,” adds a passionate Fontenot, “Can we solve what happened to Alice Marie Reeves.”
The three day conference goes from Friday to Sunday, and will include family members of Reeves, private investigators, and those in the community who also want their missing loved ones case finally solved.
