The 68th Annual Delcambre Shrimp Festival is a family affair for the family of this year’s king.
For the first time in the festival’s history, the 67th King Marty Leblanc Sr. has handed the crown down to his son, Marty Leblanc Jr.
“All my family done it. All of my brothers did it before me. Last year, I did it and my son is going to be the last of the Leblancs that are shrimping kings.” said Leblanc Sr.
As it’s a long held tradition, Leblanc Sr. believes it’s no surprise that he would one day pass down the crown of the to his son.
“He’s been shrimping since he was 5 years old, that’s all he ever wanted to do.” said Leblanc Sr.
“From Kindergarten to the 7th grade, one the back of my report card where the teacher commented, it said I was going to be a shrimper.” added Leblanc Jr.
That doesn’t mean the new king wasn’t a little nervous about the taking the position, but his father knew just what to say.
“Just go do it. It’s something fun. You will never get another chance to do this in your life. You get to be the shrimp king. Go do it.” said Leblanc Sr.
The Leblanc’s view shrimping as a way of life and the Delcambre Shrimp Festival is a great way to celebrate
“”We have had times but the harder you work, the more you make but you will have hard times but that’s just part of the job. It’s a great feeling. I get to hang out with all of family because otherwise I would be shrimping. This is the only time we actually get together.” said Leblanc Jr.
