Lafayette, LA – A New Vision Leadership Foundation of Acadiana is a youth leadership organization developing today’s at-risk youth into tomorrow’s community leaders through education, civic empowerment, and career development. The non-profit is located in the McComb-Veazy Neighborhood where the relationship between residents and police has at times been tense.
As the founder of A New Vision Leadership Foundation of Acadiana, Erica Williams saw a unique opportunity for the organization to help mend the divide. “A New Vision Leadership Foundation of Acadiana was right in the midst of everything,” she says. “I thought, what if we could find a way to build some bridges within the community?” To do so she turned to her favorite sport, basketball, and Hoop Dreams was born.
Northside High School students will compete for the basketball trophy when they play against the Lafayette Police Department and the Sheriff Department. Last year the officers won the competition by a very slim margin and the youth are out to reclaim the title. The day will be filled with youth entertainment, special performances, concessions and a load of basketball skills test and games. THIS IS A FREE, FAMILY-FRIENDLY EVENT.
The 6th annual Hoop Dreams event will take place on Saturday, March 7th, 2020 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Domingue Center located at 901 Mudd Ave, Lafayette, LA 70501. Our Title Sponsor is Love Our Schools and Silver Sponsor is our local Sheriff’s Department.
In the 6 years since the events inception, Erica has noticed that the relationship between the police officers and the kids who participated in the game has warmed. “That’s a small step in the right direction”, she says.
