DOTD Contractor Killed in Early Morning Crash

IBERVILLE PARISH – A DOTD contractor was killed this morning. According to DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson, the contractor was killed when a vehicle in a work zone allegedly collided with equipment that ultimately made impact with the worker. According to Trooper Taylor Scrantz with Louisiana State Police Troop A, it happened on I-10 westbound near mile marker 134 just east of Whiskey Bay. The identity of the contractor has not been identified due to next of kin being notified. Wilson says, “This is a somber reminder that safety on the roadway is of the utmost importance and that drivers must be extra diligent when in or approaching work zones. This particular work zone is on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge where contract workers are conducting joint repairs during non-peak driving hours. Our partners at Louisiana State Police are currently investigating the incident.”

Wilson says following these simple rules to help make the roadways safer:

  • Don’t drive distracted
  • Don’t drive impaired
  • Follow directions from the signs
  • Buckle up
