Downtown Alive! (DTA!) welcomes Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie on September 15.
This special DTA! kickoff for the fall season is presented in collaboration with Festivals Acadiens et Créole, and showcases a revamped DTA! event including expanded food vendors, pre-concert entertainment as part of the DTA! “Happiest Hour”, and family-friendly activities.
Geno Delafose, a native of Eunice, Louisiana is a Zydeco accordionist and singer. He is one of the younger generations of the genre who has created the sound known as the nouveau Zydeco. His sound is deeply rooted in traditional Creole music with strong influences from Cajun music and also country and western. In 1994, he debuted with album French Rockin’ Boogie on Rounder Records. He has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the “Best Zydeco Or Cajun Music Album” category for his Le Cowboy Creole album (2007).
Before the concert, and right after work ends for our Downtown employees, DTA! hosts Lafayette’s Happiest Hour where a select downtown bar or restaurant takes over the DTA! bar to showcase their skills, offering nearby employees a specially priced Happiest Hour drink and pre-concert entertainment.
The first DTA! Happiest Hour premiers at Parc International this Friday with specialty drinks by Pamplona Tapas Bar featuring their famous “Sangria” at special Happiest Hour price of $3 to include Pamplona Souvenir Cup from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. They will be joined by a live Cajun Jam featuring the UL Cajun Ensemble with Chad Huval. Harold Bernard of Glide Studios will present a Cajun dance demonstration during the jam to gear dancers in for an evening of fun. The party will continue after DTA! with an “After Party” which will begin at Pamplona Tapa’s Bar.
Downtown Alive! is a family friendly event, and this season we’re making it even better. We’re starting by ensuring family friendly seating is provided in the grassy areas of our Parcs with a clear view to the stage. This season we’re also introducing the DTAkids! club with exclusive kid-fun locations at Parc International. DTAkids! will receive their own special club pass and stickers, with more features coming soon. This week, DTAkids! will enjoy face-painting, balloon artists, and bungee jumps from Jump Hero Bungee, and activities at the Children’s Museum of Acadiana inside Parc International.
A revamped food area called DTA! Manager will also be introduced. For DTA! patrons with an appetite, each week a rotating cast of food trucks and vendors will serve up a variety of local favorites. This Friday, DTA! Mangerwill feature delicious dishes from local favorites including Taco Sisters, Bons Temps Grill, Carpe Diem!, Joy’s Curbside Cuisine, and Lagneaux’s.
DTA! is Lafayette’s original street party! This week we join forces with a national event called “Parking Day” where parking spaces are reimagined into people spaces (Parklets) for a day. As part of an event taking place across the nation, this party takes place all day long on Jefferson Street where Downtown groups and businesses compete for the best entry. Make sure to check them out and make your vote as we announce the winners at DTA! Then join us next Friday as we get back to our roots with a Street Party edition of Downtown Alive! taking place on Jefferson Street.
As a reminder – DTA! is funded through drink sales, so please leave your ice chests at home. Smoking and pets are not allowed to encourage a safe and family-friendly event for all.
