Jessie Smollett faces felony charges after filing false police report claiming he was the victim of a hate-based attack. NBC’s Wendy Woolfolk reports
(NBC News) “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett was arrested early Thursday on charges of felony disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false police report claiming he was the victim of a brutal hate crime.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said Smollett carried out the hoax because he was unhappy with his salary on “Empire.” He went on to say Smollett sent himself a letter containing racist language and, when that did not work, he paid two men $3,500 to orchestrate the attack.
“This announcement today recognizes that ‘Empire’ actor Jussie Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career,” Johnson said.
