A Kinder woman and her father were arrested Monday on multiple charges after deputies say they used mobile banking apps to deposit the same check into multiple accounts and different banks.
Sarah Marie Gartman, 18, of 27000 block of Highway 383, is charged with attempted theft, attempted transmission of monetary funds, attempted bank fraud, theft, illegal transmission of monetary funds, bank fraud, and monetary instrument abuse and is being held on $5,000 bond.
Her father, Joseph Phillip Gartman, 39, same address, was also arrested Monday and charged with theft and bank fraud. He is also being held on $5,000 bond.
Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s detectives investigated a complaint involving bank fraud and other crimes. In April, investigators say a check written by the complainant in the amount of $300 was deposited in the Gartman’s bank account using a mobile deposit application from a cellular device. According to detectives, the Gartmans altered the check and deposited it into a different account at a different bank, then altered it again and deposited in a third account.
