After the arrest of a father and son in an accidental shooting of a 7 year old at Moss Bluff Elementary, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Tony Mancuso said the incident was 100% preventable.
George Fournet of Post Exchange in Youngsville says anyone wanting to own a firearm should a take gun safety course.
“It’s a big responsibility.” Fournet said.
“Just like a vehicle, you are only as safe as the driver. With a gun, you are only as safe as the shooting.” he continued.
When keeping a gun around the house, Fournet and the local authorities stress the importance of keeping the gun in a secure location..
“One of the best ways to store a gun is to store the ammunition in a separate area.” Fournet.
“I know not everyone can afford a nice big gun, that’s no excuse, you can buy a lock that prevent this from happening.” said Sheriff Mancuso.
Fournet believes it’s just as important to educate children about guns.
“It’s not too far fetched of an idea to understand, they are not supposed to do certain things with gun.” said Fournet.
Fournet says gun owners should know how to clean it and properly hold the firearm by keeping the finger off of the trigger unless it’s to fire.
“Just like teaching how to drive a car, they need to be taught how to manipulate a gun the right way. I think parents are instrumental in this.” said Fournet.
