Opelousas, La–Jan 30, 2020The St. Landry-Evangeline United Way’s Women United Women With Heart Luncheon and Awards event is on February 13, 2020. This prestigious event will take place at the Opelousas Civic Center from 11:00-1:00, with tickets at $30. A “Power of the Purse” purse auction will also be a highlight of the event. “ The 8th Annual Women With Heart Luncheon is proud to have First Lady of Louisiana, Donna Edwards, as our keynote speaker”, said Josie Frank, President of the St. Landry-Evangeline Women United.“ The strength, creativity and wisdom of Louisiana
women is inspiring, and I’m excited about spending time with some incredibly powerful women at the upcoming annual luncheon,” said First Lady Donna Edwards. “Women are the backbone of our society. When women do better so do our children, families, communities and state. That’s why it’s so important that we advocate for one another, and I consider it an honor to use my platform to do just that and to be this year’s keynote speaker. “The event will be recognizing two outstanding women from St. Landry and Evangeline Parishes respectively, who have distinguished themselves as caring, compassionate philanthropists and community volunteers. From St. Landry Parish, LaVonya Malveaux will receive the Woman With Heart award for her passion and work related to the youth of St. Landry Parish. Malveaux is a Judicial Administrator for the Opelousas City Court. A past recipient of the Community Foundation Philanthropy Award and the St. Landry Chamber of Commerce citizen award, she has also served as board member and president of the St. Landry- Evangeline United Way. Receiving the Woman With Heart award from Evangeline Parish is Camille Fontenot, a former teacher and tourism director for Evangeline Parish. Fontenot helped bring attention to child marriages, and presented compelling testimony to the state legislature to bring about changes in the marriage laws to end underage marriages. She currently promotes the historic Hotel Cazan in Mamou, Louisiana, often making it the site of cause- related conferences. Proceeds from this event will support the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) and other programs and projects related to women and children’s issues.
