Update: Sheriff Blaise W. Smith advises that an overturned amphibious vehicle resulted in the death of 22-year-old, Jeffrey Paul Curry, Jr., of Arnaudville, Louisiana.
At approximately 12:30 pm on Wednesday afternoon, December 11, 2019, an amphibious vehicle overturned in Bayou Ramos in Amelia, Louisiana. The vehicle was carrying three men who were working in the Bayou. Two of the men were able to swim to safety. Curry was located about three hours later by divers with the Dive Section of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Agencies assisting in the effort to locate Curry were the Amelia Fire Department, Morgan City Fire Department, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Sheriff Blaise Smith and the deputies of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office send our condolences to the family and friends of Jeffrey Paul Curry, Jr. Our prayers and thoughts will be with his family and friends during this time.
A third person has been recovered from the scene. Further details are being withheld at this moment pending notification of the family. Deputies and first responders with the Amelia Fire Department, Morgan City Fire Department, and Acadian Ambulance are on the scene at Bayou Ramos in Amelia at this time.
A “swamp buggy” work vehicle overturned in the bayou while working. Two workers are out of the water and rescuers are working to located another person.
