Louisiana’s Fire Marshal, Butch Browning said the cause of the fire was an electrical issue. NEWS15 spoke with Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office who says Lt. Lancon was a loved deputy and will be missed.
“The fire was just so bad, the smoke was so intense, that his attempts to rescue were unsuccessful” says Fire Marshal Browning. Unfortunately, Lt. Paul Lancon, who worked at the Iberia Parish Jail since June of 2015, didn’t make it out.
Major Wendell Raborn told NEWS15, “It’s been tough. The sheriff doesn’t see everybody as employees, he sees everybody as kind of extended family.”
Lancon and his roommate were sleeping after working their shift at the Iberia Parish Jail.
“Certainly a tragedy to the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office and first responders for that manner”, Fire Marshall Browning.
“You know, some people who were very close to him took it really hard because he was well liked. He was a good dude, a good lieutenant, a good leader for the department” says Major Raborn.
The department is in communication with Lt. Lancon’s family so they can be involved in the unsung hero’s funeral.
Lt. Lancon’s roommate is in the hospital recovering from 1st degree burns and smoke inhalation.
