New Iberia, LA (KADN)– The Catholic Panthers are hungry to repeat as state champions, but standing in their way is a Notre Dame team that beat them 49-0 earlier in the regular season. Panthers coach Brent Indest said that feels like ages ago. His team had to introduce seven new players on defense to start the year. The Panthers lost in the regular season before taking out the Pioneers in the 2017 state title game. As a result, they have confidence they can do that again.
“That’s built in because of what we did last year,” Indest said. “We got hammered last year early in the season so there’s not much convincing that needs to be done. We are just going to have to come and play well especially early and be able to weather that early storm that they tend to bring.’
Notre Dame knows they can’t cash in the 49-0 win for a state title. Coach Louie Cook is proud of this junior class that had to sit behind last year’s seniors. Quarterback Ben Broussard and others have stepped up.
“Ben has been everything,” Coach Cook said. “We thought he could do some good things and he really has. The line has been the engine so to speak that has got this thing going.”
Notre Dame and Catholic go toe-to-toe Thursday evening at 6pm.
