During hurricane season and with the threat of a possible storm, evacuation is always something that needs to be well thought out and planned.
A local emergency-preparedness official tells News15 many variables go into whether to evacuate, including the severity of the storm and the amount of rainfall projected.
If you decide to evacuate it’s important not to procrastinate because conditions could quickly worsen.
“You’re not just going to be in traffic from your local area, you could actually be getting in traffic from everyone from the coastal areas coming up.”
Craig Stansbury, the director of Lafayette Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness says if you don’t leave early enough it can take up to four times the amount of time to get where you are going, or you might be trapped.
