Lake Charles, Louisiana – Following closing arguments in State vs. Kevin Daigle capital murder trial, jury has unanimously voted for the death penalty.
Original Story* Kevin Daigle was found Guilty of First Degree Murder. The penalty phase of the trial will begin at 10:00 this morning at the Lafayette courthouse. The penalty phase is expected to last a few days.
The trial continues for the man accused of killing a Louisiana state trooper in Calcasieu Parish nearly four years ago.
Kevin Daigle is charged with first degree murder in the death of Trooper Steven Vincent. News15 was in the courtroom Monday as attorneys laid out their evidence in the case.
Many chose to leave the courtroom as the jury once again watched the horrific video capturing Vincent’s death. In that video, the trooper offers to help Daigle before the suspect pulls out a shotgun and fires. He then taunts Vincent as he lays dying on the highway, asking, “You still alive?” and telling Vincent he’s going to die. Attorneys for Daigle argue that he was too drunk to understand what was happening at the time.
Monday, lawyers turned their attention to another man who met a violent end: Blake Brewer. Brewer was Daigle’s roommate, killed by a shotgun blast to the chest on the same day Vincent was killed. Daigle is also accused in Brewer’s death and will be tried separately on that second degree murder charge.
The trial is being held in Lafayette Parish since the judge granted a change of venue.
