It’s only been two weeks since the new Kaplan Mayor and Council took office, but the appointment of a new city clerk is already causing some friction between them.
At the July 3rd Meeting, Mayor Mike Kloesel wanted to appoint Heather Guidry to the position but the council shot it down.
“I nominate Heather Guidry” said Kloesel.
“Can I get a 2nd?” he asked.
The council responded with silence.
“That motion is dead.” said Kloesel.
“I’m very disappointed that y’all are not supporting the mayor. At least y’all could have had a discussion.” said Kaplan Resident Lori Domingue after the council denied the mayor for a 2nd time.
Councilwoman Melissa Guidry says they are concerned about the lack of experience Heather Guidry has compared to her predecessor Christine Trahan.
“To have an experienced clerk like I said before is very imperative that way she could help alot with the new mayor that’s coming in because he will need a lot of help from the clerk. They are going to work together on a daily basis as well as with the council.” she explained.
Mayor Kloesel argues that with heather’s experience as a paralegal, she will be able to handle the job just fine.
“The Louisiana Municipal Association has told us that once we get our appointment in office. They are going to send someone down here to train her exactly the way she is supposed to be trained.” said Kloesel.
“I’m not giving up on Heather Guidry. She’s wonderful person and she compliments my way of management.” he continued.
Despite the early friction, Mayor Kloesel says he is confident that he and the confident will work together.
