This week’s KidLit Pick of the Week is PONTCHARTRAIN BEACH – A FAMILY AFFAIR by Bryan Batt and Katy Danos.
Celebrating generations of memories at the beach!
Bryan Batt grew up amid the rides and attractions of Pontchartrain Beach amusement park founded by his grandfather Harry Batt Sr. While clearing out his mother’s estate, Batt uncovered an array of treasured unpublished photographs and mementos from the iconic beachfront attraction. Batt, along with Katy Danos, published this book with the treasured photographs and memories from celebrities, former employees, and many park-goers.
There is candid moments with musical stars, tales of beauty pageants, and photos of exciting rides and attractions that drew families from everywhere.
What I love about it:
A treasured keepsake for those who visited the attraction and area over the years.
Children and adults will enjoy the photos, memories, and historical facts throughout the book.
Reveals how rides were developed and maintained and enjoyed and how they changed over time.
It’s a story of how a business becomes a beloved part of a city’s culture.
It offered free roller coaster rides for report cards with all A’s, then during the war years, there were useful prizes like pots and pans and nylons for women in the beauty pageants.
