Tom Carroll, Director of Public Works for Lafayette Consolidated Government (LCG), has announced plans to end his provisional service no later than May 31, 2017.
Originally appointed as the Director by City-Parish President Joey Durel in 2004, Carroll retired from the position in 2014. Newly-elected Mayor-President Joel Robideaux asked Carroll to return for an interim period to assist in the start-up of his administration until he could conduct a search for his replacement.
“I’m grateful to Tom for his service to the citizens of Lafayette Parish and for his leadership within government. His experience has proven invaluable to my administration during our first year,” stated Robideaux. Under normal circumstances the role of the Public Works Director is incredibly important, and in 2016 Carroll’s experience was particularly vital as the community worked to recover from the August floods and the Robideaux administration focused on capital improvement projects.
A native of Opelousas and a 1974 graduate of the University of Louisiana (then USL) in Civil Engineering, Carroll has worked for Lafayette Consolidated Government for 23 years. He spent three years as a Hydraulic Engineer with the Corps of Engineers and 15 years in private practice of municipal engineering before his tenure with Lafayette Consolidated Government. Carroll is a member of the UL Civil Engineering Advisory Board, and in 2015 was appointed to the Louisiana Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors for a six year term.
Robideaux hopes to fill the position for a seamless transition. “Ideally, I would have the new Director identified prior to Tom’s departure. We have some great local talent and I believe the position will draw candidates from across the region as well. I’m committed to hiring the most qualified person for the job.”
