It’s award season in Hollywood and you may have already heard of the nominations and wins 2018 movie Green Book is collecting. What you may not know is the movie features a song by Acadiana musicians, Bobby Page and the Riff Raffs.
When V.J. Boulet wrote “I Love My Baby” in Crowley back in the 1960s, it was just a song for their band. “I wrote the song very quickly, it was under pressure.”
Boulet’s cousin and lead singer of the band, Bobby Page adds, “Remember we had to put it out so fast because we needed some recordings for dances.”
Fast forward more than 50 years. Boulet gets an unforgettable phone call from Ram Records in Shreveport. “I Love My Baby” was requested to be in the Universal Motion Picture, “Green Book” and on the soundtrack.
“Bobby and I just looked at each other, we were speechless to know that this was taking place. It was totally unbelievable in a 60 year span once is unbelievable, but to happen twice in a lifetime you just don’t see that,” Boulet explains.
That’s right, twice. The same song was featured on a movie soundtrack, “Company Man” in 2000.
Boulet says, “We’re both part of the Swamp Pop Hall of Fame, but I think this is probably the highlight of our music career.”
Boulet and Page thought it couldn’t get any better, that is until they heard the chorus of their song in the film and saw their names in the credits.
“It was just one line ‘I Love My Baby’ and when that came up we just lost track of everything we all yelled ,” says Boulet.
Page describes it. “In a fifty foot screen it gives you the (goosebumps in French).” Boulet adds, “He’s talking about goosebumps.”
The goosebumps aren’t about the fame. It’s picturing their music’s whole new audience.
Boulet imagines, “A young couple is sitting on the couch by a fireplace in Paris drinking some wine, listening to your song. We’d never have that opportunity because we were here in Lafayette.”
With Green Book racking up nominations and awards this season, this opportunity has become an inspiration to Boulet.
“I’m looking at Grammy now probably won’t ever lead to anything, but it just wants you to get to work, nothing is impossible now.”
Green Book currently has five Oscar nominations and has already won several awards including Golden Globes for Best Musical Motion Picture. The 91st Academy Awards is scheduled for February 24th.
