Local Poet Highlights Issues of Modern-day Incarceration System

The Hilliard Art Museum hosted a spoken word performance tonight.

Performance pieces responded to the issue of incarceration and the modern prison system. Poets spoke inside of the “Slavery, The Prison Industrial Complex” exhibit. Tonight’s host is particularly passionate toward prison reform.

Resident Poet Alex “Poetic Soul” Johnson believes that education is key.

“I think rehabilitation is the most important factor. I feel that the majority of the issues that we have, from poverty to incarceration, it’s because of lack of education.”

Performances will continue this Saturday, 7:00 p.m. at the Harambee Event Center.
