Louisiana Sheriffs Seek Additional Funding

Louisiana Sheriffs are asking for a $4 dollar a day boost in what the state pays them to house state inmates. A result of dwindling jail populations following criminal justice reforms at the state level.

According to nola.com, sheriffs are currently paid between $10 and $25 dollars per day to house the state’s $18 thousand inmates. A boost in the state’s per diem payment would cost taxpayers nearly $26 million dollars, which is $8 million more than what criminal justice reforms are projected to save the state this budget cycle.
