A new initiative between the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Lafayette Parish School System aims to insure the LPSO has a school resource officer in every LPSS school.
These officers would be in addition to any officers provided at parish schools through municipal police departments, LPSO spokesman John Mowell said.
“This would be a collaborative effort,” Mowell said.
The goal of the agreement, Mowell said, is to ensures every board-operated school in the parish is staffed with a qualified SRO managed by the LPSO.
According to Mowell, there is no timeline to achieve the goal of placing an SRO at each school.
“There are a lot of variables, including hiring, training, and certification of officers as SROs,” Mowell said.
