NEW IBERIA – The above video was taken last year when James Andrews was a deputy for the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office.
News 15 obtained this video from a source close to IPSO.
In a statement to News 15, the Sheriff’s Office says a complaint was lodged after the August 5th 2017 incident, and the ensuing investigation quote revealed a violation of procedure did occur and proper action was taken.
The Sheriff’s spokesman doesn’t specify what, if any, disciplinary action was taken against Andrews.
New Iberia mayor Freddie Decourt says they were not aware of the video when Andrews was hire, and that there was no indication during the interview process that Andrews had any kind of disciplinary issues.
“Looked at backgrounds, looked at any information we could,” says the Mayor, “None of this surfaced, obviously the Iberia Sheriff’s Office knew about this. He was an IPSO officer when this occurred, but that obviously never got to us.”
He also says that the video comes as a shock to the newly formed police department.
“I was very surprised. Andrews has been nothing but an exemplary employee for us. He’s been here for a few months. Done nothing but contribute to our department…Was not expecting that on the video,” says Decourt.
It’s yet to be seen if legal action will be taken against Andrews.
After seeing the video, Iberia parish District Attorney Bo Duhe sent the video to the State Police Bureau of Investigation to determine if criminal charges against Andrews are warranted.
