New Iberia to Honor Three Who Saved Elderly Man

New Iberia Mayor Freddie Decourt on Tuesday will hand out Life Saving Valor Awards to three men who pulled an elderly man from a burning mobile home Jan. 23.

Johnny Barnes, Dre’ Gary and Gerard Duhon are credited with leaping into action after they smelled smoke while on the job at Iberia Rental and noticed a mobile home on South Weeks Street behind the business engulfed in flames. The trio rushed to the scene, heard a faint cry for help from within the building and began tearing at the structure to get inside. They helped rescue the victim as firefighters arrived.

The awards presentation will happen during the New Iberia City Council meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
