It’s been a several month process for the city of St. Martinville as they searched for their new chief of police.
“We had a very large pool of applicants that took it, I wanna say it was in the teens.” said councilman Mike Fuselier.
Once in the teens, weeded down to four, then one, highly qualified individual.
“I means a lot. It’s dear to my heart, it’s what I’ve been doing for 20 years and I’m looking forward to working with the community.”said New St.Martinville Police Chief, Ricky Martin.
During the vetting process, Fuselier spoke with all four candidates, hoping whoever would take on the title would also integrate themselves as part of the community.
“I wanna see a lot more community policing really touching base with the businesses, the residents, knowing that he’s out there so people know that the police department is their friend.”said Fuselier.
And for Martin, that’s his number one goal.
“Right now we have a divide between the police department and the community and we need to bring that together, if we don’t do that then we won’t get anything accomplished that’s definitely number one is bringing the community closer with the police department.” said Martin.
