A teacher at New Iberia Senior High School found herself in a precarious situation as a she began choking on a peppermint, but thanks to the quick action of one of her students, her life was saved.
“I was nervous myself .” said NISH Senior, De’Lance Green. “I almost panicked but I told myself that I had to be calm about the situation.”
As the rest of class froze at the sight of their choking, Green successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver as seen he saw it from watching TV.
“I felt good about it because I got a chance to help out a teacher who was in need and I was glad that I watched that movie and learned how to do it cause if I didn’t, I would’ve panicked.” said Green
Principal Curt Landry heard the news not too long after it happened.
“I’m excited to know that one of our students saw a teacher in need in a very situation and jumped into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver and we all went home otherwise this could have been a serious and tragic situation.” Landry said.
The teacher Green saved and the school awarded him with gift-cards, but the biggest revelation is how that moment may be changing the course of his life
“I was going to go to UTI for diesel mechanic but now I’m looking at a new path of becoming an EMT. I discovered at the time of need, I’m always ready.” said Green.
