Opelousas Deputy City Marshal arrested for domestic abuse

Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz stated, “On June 12, 2019, deputies were called to Opelousas Deputy City Marshal Michael Potter’s home for a complaint of domestic abuse battery on Potter’s “common law” wife of over 20 years.”

According to reports, Potter’s wife stated they had gotten into a physical altercation on June 11, 2019 at approximately 9:00pm but did not want to get him in trouble nor did she want to bring embarrassment upon the city marshal due to Potter being a Deputy Marshal. The wife stated the whole thing started when Potter woke up in a bad mood and they argued throughout the day. The wife left the home then later returned to residence, Potter was standing in the living room and punched her in the face twice with a closed fist. The wife began defending herself when Potter grabbed his duty weapon along with another gun and left the residence.

The wife sustained two small lacerations on her face but did not need medical attention. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Michael Potter.

On June 13, 2019 just at 5:00am, Michael Potter walked into the St. Landry Parish Jail and surrendered to law enforcement and booked.

On behalf of Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, this is Deputy Chief Eddie Thibodeaux. All persons are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
