Deputies say an Opelousas man rammed his wife’s car with his van, then beat her with a pipe after she tried to escape a domestic violence incident last month.
According to a St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman, Chet Allen Richard, 35, faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery stemming from the May 18 incident.
On that day SLPSO deputies responded to a domestic violence complaint on Homer Richard Road in Opelousas. While the deputies were en route, another call came in saying Richard hit his wife in her vehicle with his van and was beating her with a pipe. According to the report, Richard had even broken her teeth.
When a deputy arrived, he said he saw the vehicles but Richard had already fled the scene. Richard’s wife was still in her vehicle suffering from injuries.
A witness reported that she was driving down the same road and noticed the vehicles in the road. She then saw Richard exit his vehicle, break the back glass out of the other vehicle and began to hit a woman with a metal pipe. The witness then backed her vehicle up and called 911.
Richard, seeing the witness, fled.
Deputies were able to recover the pry bar that was used in the attack, with blood still on it.
According to the report, the victim said Richard was supposed to pay her child support and wanted to meet her at her home but she refused and wanted to meet at a local store. Richard convinced her to meet near her home on the road.
According to the victim, Richard sideswiped her vehicle, then turned around and hit her head on. She said Richard then exited his vehicle and tried to get in her vehicle.
The victim said she locked her door, then Richard went back to his van and removed a pipe. She said he returned and busted her window out then began to beat her with a pipe.
Deputies said the victim sustained missing teeth along with multiple cuts and bruises throughout her body and was treated at a local hospital.
A warrant was issued for Richard, who was later arrested and booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail. He is being held without bond.
