UPDATE: 14 Year Old Opelousas Jr. High Student Charged in Incident Involving a Firearm on Campus

UPDATE (2/17/2020 at 7:34PM): A 14 Year old student of Opelousas Jr. High has been charged with the incident involving a firearm being on campus today. After a follow up investigation it was learned that the student in question had allegedly pointed a firearm at several students. The student was charged with the following:

(4) Cts. Aggravated assault with a firearm
Illegal Possession of a firearm by a student
Illegal Possession of a Handgun by a juvenile

The student will have an expedited hearing in the juvenile court within the upcoming days, and has been removed from the school pending administrative actions by the St. Landry Parish School Board. Opelousas – Opelousas Police are currently investigating a possible firearm reported on campus at Opelousas Jr. High School.  At approximately 10:15 A.M.  officers were on campus following up on unrelated investigations, when a disturbance between several students occurred.  After the disturbance was under control some students reported to staff that one of the students may have been seen with a firearm. All involved were detained for questioning. Officers and staff conducted a search of the campus and as of yet no weapon has been located. The matter is still under investigation by Opelousas Police and St. Landry Parish School administration.
