Opelousas Teacher Arrested for Cruelty to a Juvenile

Opelousas Police Department: On today investigators with the Opelousas Police Department arrested Mrs. Janice Henry, (age: 54) of Opelousas, for (2) counts of Cruelty to a Juvenile. The arrest was a result of an investigation of an incident that occurred at Opelousas Middle School on November 5, 2019. It is alleged that Mrs. Henry mistreated two students by physically disciplining them using rubber bands. The process resulted in obvious physical injury to both students. Mrs. Henry was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail.

News15’s Breon Martin spoke with the newly appointed principal of Opelousas Middle School, Marcella Fisher, who says that the teacher in question is no longer on campus since the complaint was received, and was removed from the campus Wednesday morning.

Fisher says the school has been cooperative with police and the central office, she also says the school has two counselors available for students in need. She then redirected Breon to the superintendent for an interview.

Breon called St. Landry Parish School Superintendent Patrick Jenkins’ cell and left a voicemail/text message. Superintendents Jenkins says he is not available today, and is currently out of the office.
