Opioid crisis draws top U.S. drug official to New Orleans

National Drug Policy Director James Carroll will join U.S. Sen. John Kennedy in New Orleans Thursday to host discussions on the opioid crisis.

In a statement to WDSU, Kennedy said, “Jim Carroll recognizes, as I do, that addiction is at a crisis level in this country. We’re going to have a frank discussion about the problem and possible solutions. Opioid overdoses caused 400 deaths across this state in 2017 and hundreds more since. Addiction has destroyed enough families in Louisiana.”

Kennedy and Carroll will first meet at Bridge House, a drug and alcohol treatment center in New Orleans. They also plan to tour a treatment facility in St. Tammany Parish.
