With the population declining in certain areas of St Landry Parish, the school board is proactively working on a plan for the smaller student population.
“One, is a strategic plan. It’s a 3 to 5 year plan that we’re working on. Two, is the demographic study. Three is the facility assessment. We’re determining the needs of our facilities,” said Patrick Jenkins, St Landry Parish Superintendent.
Recently, a preliminary demographic study projected an average loss of 150 students each year until 2023. The final report will include outside factors like housing changes.
“I’m hoping to have the final report to the board probably by the mid to the end part of October. That way, I can get the 2017 numbers in,” said Mike Hefner, Chief Demographer.
Overall, the three step plan is a way for the school board to get a head start on preparing for the future of their students and staff.
You know its better to plan for the future and hopefully we will have more students than we can accommodate than to not have a plan at all.
Accordingp Hefner, the school board and superintendent working hand and hand has brought about a lot of good things.
“I think this facility plan of theirs is really along the right track,” said Hefner.
