Select catholic churches in Lafayette held a historic piece of the Bible within their holy walls. The holy relic, the hair of St Mary Magdalene, was on display Friday at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.
“Mary Magdalene is a woman that is amazing.” expressed Fr Florian Racine, “Everyone loved Mary Magdalene and I think she shows us a path of friendship with the Lord, of discovering true love in God. She helped us to trust into the Lord, to love Him and to be able to love people and what we received by following Jesus.”
Carrying the relics of Saint Mary Magdalene from south of France, where they reside in the Basilica of Saint Mary Magdalene to Lafayette is quite a big deal for Catholics around Acadiana.
“Usually we don’t take away the relic from the Basilica because it’s difficult to carry them around.” said Fr Florian Racine.
Saint Mary Magdalene was the first adorer of Jesus and was known for cleaning Jesus’ feet with her hair.
“She wept tears on the feet of Jesus and then she had nothing to wipe the feet of Jesus. I think it’s important for everybody to learn about Mary Magdalene.” said Fr Florian Racine, “And when we look at the life of Mary Magdalene, I like to say there are three graces that she learned from the Lord. Divine mercy, discipleship, to love Jesus, to follow him and to announce Jesus to the apostles. So that’s what we present you know for Christians, you know so that’s what we present for Christians this great figure of Mary Magdalene and by venerating those relics we get special blessing from Mary Magdalene who is in heaven right now.”
