According to Sheriff Blaise W. Smith with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s office, an inmate attempted to escape the jail on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at 5:06 pm.
A corrections deputy observed Anthony Jones cause damage to a light fixture in his cell. Jones was placed in another room and subsequently attempted to escape from that room. His attempt was not successful and deputies kept him in custody. Acadian Ambulance was called to give medical attention to Jones. After being medically cleared, Jones was booked on the charges of criminal damage to property and attempted escape.
“Because of the quick response of jail personnel and patrol deputies, the attempt was stopped almost immediately,” said Sheriff Smith.
Jones has been incarcerated at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center since September 20, 2018, on the charge of 1st-degree robbery in reference to a robbery that occurred on August 31, 2018, at a business in Bayou Vista.
