St. Martinville Mayor accused of not paying utility bills on time

St. Martinville Mayor Melinda Mitchell is in the hot seat yet again. The Mayor is accused of not paying her utility bills on time and giving herself and her daughter extensions. News 15’s spoke to St. Martinville locals who say they are furious, while Mayor Pro-temp Craig Prosper says Mayor Mitchell hasn’t paid a bill in three months. Prosper believes it simply isn’t fair that Mayor Mitchell was able to use her power to keep her utilties running, despite being months behind. He brought this issue to the board on Monday, and though they have stripped Mayor Mitchells power to grant extensions. But according to state law if a state auditor, or the governing authority of any parish charges a public officer with outstanding payments of the collection or custody of public funds, the govornor can suspend that official from office and others who didnt report this could pay a fine.
Prosper says the concil is in the process of drafting a letter to governor John Bel Edwards. They intend on sending the letter next week. News 15 also spoke with Mayor Mitchell, though she declined to do on camera she says the matter has been taken care of.
