State Police Investigating Officer Involved Shooting in Lake Charles

Lake Charles – On October 26, 2019, the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was requested by the Lake Charles Police Department (LCPD) to investigate a shooting incident involving one of their officers.

The preliminary investigation revealed LCPD officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence on Tulip Street in Lake Charles shortly before noon. Upon arrival, officers encountered 45-year-old Kerry Van-Buren at the residence. As officers began to investigate the disturbance, Van-Buren entered his vehicle and struck a LCPD patrol vehicle as he attempted to flee the scene.  As the incident occurred, an LCPD officer discharged his firearm striking Van-Buren.

Van-Buren was transported to a Lake Charles area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and released. He was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on charges related to the incident.  No other injuries were reported.

The investigation is active and ongoing. No further information is available at this time.
