Michigan man finds trail of blood and dismembered body parts in apartment house basement after noticing odd smell, leading to neighbor’s arrest; family of missing woman last seen with suspect await identification. WOOD’s Ken Kolker reports.
(WOOD) A man who discovered parts of a woman’s body in the basement of his Grand Rapids, Michiagan apartment house says he hadn’t noticed anything unusual in previous days.
The man, who didn’t want to be identified, lives on the lower level, below the apartment of suspect Jared Chance.
Chance, 29, was arraigned in 61st District Court Wednesday on charges of mutilation of a dead body and concealing the death of an individual.
Grand Rapids police said Tuesday they haven’t been able to identify the victim because they found only partial remains. DNA has been sent to the Michigan State Police Crime Lab for testing.
Police say Chance mutilated the woman’s body on Friday. Two days later, on Sunday, Chance’s downstairs neighbor and the neighbor’s girlfriend started smelling a foul odor.
Police are not linking him to the disappearance of 31-year-old Ashley Young of Oshtemo Township, but her family has linked the two on a Facebook page dedicated to finding her. Even before Chance’s arrest, Young’s family posted that she was last thought to be seen with Chance at 1:30 a.m. on November 29 at Mulligan’s Bar in Grand Rapids.
