Suspect to Be Charged With Attempted First Degree Murder in Grand Coteau Officer Involved Shooting

“Instead of falling and giving up the fight, her survival instincts took over.”

That’s what staff say officer Kiara Harris did after the suspect Michael Lucas allegedly shot her during a routine traffic stop in Grand Coteau Wednesday.

Police say after running a red light, the suspect was pulled over when he shot officer Harris in the upper right arm.

“He took off and she gave chase, he then crashed his vehicle in a ditch and she chased him some more, and took a bad guy off the street,” said St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Eddie Thibodeaux.

A bad guy with a hefty rap sheet.

“From California to Illinois, from minor theft to domestic, to battery on an officer said Thibodaux.”

According to St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office, after his arrest Lucas admitted to shooting officer Harris as well as implicating himself in a homicide in Calhoun County Florida.

“Currently our detectives are working with Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office for his involvement in their homicide,” stated Thibodeaux.

Officers throughout St. Landy Parish are relieved that the incident was handled quickly , because it could’ve been much worse.

“It puts it in perspective that we love this job, but we still want to go home to our kids and our spouses,” said Thibodeaux.
