SAN MARCOS, Texas – The tandem of Alissa Dalton and Summer Ellyson guided No. 7 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Softball to another win at the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Tournament on Saturday, this time helping secure a trophy to bring home.
Dalton’s two-out RBI single in the first inning provided all the offense needed as Ellyson fired a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Coastal Carolina in the tournament’s championship game.
Louisiana (50-4), the regular season champions after an undefeated run in conference play, captured its 15th SBC Tournament championship in the 20-year history of the event.
The Ragin’ Cajuns also clinched the program’s first 50-win season since 2012, extended their winning streak to 27 games, and secured the Sun Belt’s automatic bid into the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
No. 7 Louisiana awaits the assignment for its 21st consecutive appearance and 29th overall in the NCAA Tournament, which begins with the regional round Friday-Sunday, May 17-19.
The field of 64 teams will be announced on Sunday, May 12 at 8 p.m. (CDT) on ESPN2. The team will gather at Pete’s on Johnston to view the selection show.
LEADING THE RAGIN’ CAJUNS
Kara Gremillion, who took away several would-be hits with her quick reflexes at third base, scored the winning run after leading off the contest with a bunt single and taking second base on a throwing error.
For the second straight day, Dalton came through with a clutch two-out base hit when she scored Gremillion in the first inning. She concluded the tournament with three two-out RBI which increased her team-high tying season total to 22.
Sarah Hudek was another key cog in the Louisiana defense as she tracked down her tournament-high four fly balls in left field.
Ellyson struck out seven including back-to-back punch outs during her biggest stand of the game after the Chanticleers (39-21) had the tying run in scoring position after a leadoff double in the sixth inning.
Ellyson shutout the SBC’s leading home run hitting team for the fourth time in five meetings (held Coastal scoreless in three regular season appearances).
Representing Louisiana on the all-tournament team was Alissa Dalton, Kara Gremillion, Sarah Hudek and Summer Ellyson who was named the Most Outstanding Player.
The Ragin’ Cajuns 27-game winning streak is the second-longest active in the nation and one game shy of the program record 28-game streak recorded in 2012.
Louisiana improved to 61-9 (.871) all-time in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
All three of the team-leading RBI produced by Alissa Dalton in the SBC Tournament came in a two-out situation.
Sarah Hudek rounded up eight fly ball outs over the three games Louisiana played in the tournament.
Summer Ellyson worked 21 innings, yielded only three earned runs, and limited foes to 11 hits and a .153 average in leading the Ragin’ Cajuns to the SBC Tournament title.
Now with a nation-leading 37 wins, Summer Ellyson extended her hold on second place in the program’s record book and moved ever so closer to posting the first 40-win season since Brooke Mitchell’s record 45 wins in 2004.
Alissa Dalton’s 2-for-3 performance led her to her 16th multiple-hit game of the season, tied with Julie Rawls for the team lead.
Kara Gremillion’s critical hit in the first inning extended her current hitting streak to her season-best of five games.
