This week’s KidLit Pick of the Week is MUSIC BOXES by TONJA DRECKER.
This is a middle grade novel about a twelve-year-old girl named Lindsey who dreams of being a star ballerina. But after her family moves to New York, Lindsey is stuck taking lessons at a mediocre community center.
When Lindsey meets Madame Destinée, the teacher of a top dance school, she is offered free dance classes in exchange for Lindsey’s participation in the school’s midnight dance shows. At first, Lindsey loves the excitement of the stage (and thrill of sneaking out), but soon discovers that all is not as it appears. As the other dancers begin to disappear, music boxes with figurines replicating the dancers begin to appear. Lindsey must discover the truth behind the magical façade before it is too late for her or her sister.
