Lafayette, UL started their spring practice today at Cajun field. After losing senior quarterback, Andre Nunez, the race begins on who will start as quarterback this upcoming season. “Levi is the leader of our club house,” said Coach Billy Napier, “he has the most experience and played a significant role on our team last year”
7 quarterback managed to get reps in for the first spring practice. “I think it shows character when you try to get guys up to your speed and make it competitive” said Levi Lewis. Soon to be Junior, Lewis doesn’t mind proving he’s the right man for the number one position. From the end of last season to the last day before practice started, Levi said all he has done is watched film. “Its 90% mental and 10% physical” said Lewis, ” I’m just trying to take initiative on trying to be the starting quarterback and showing that aspect of my game, and that’s just off the field. On the field I’m just showing I’m that guy, and that comes with watching film and balling”
Last season Lewis finished the year with 37-of-59 passing for 585 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions in 14 games. “Levi is a good athlete, but that’s the area where he will make improvements,” Coach Napier said, “now he’s comfortable with our concept, he becomes more comfortable recognizing defense structure, put those two together you can anticipate better decisions”
The Ragin Cajuns season opener will be Saturday, Aug. 31, against Southeastern Conference-opponent Mississippi State. The exciting matchup will be played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
