A small monkey missing from the New Iberia Research Center since Saturday is back home. An NIRC spokesperson said a thorough veterinary exam confirmed the 12-pound rhesus macaque is in good health. The monkey will be kept under veterinary observation for a few days before he is returned to his social group. A New Iberia resident spotted the monkey this morning and called a phone number the University had posted on its Facebook page to report a sighting, the spokesperson said. The young primate is part of a breeding group and does not carry any transmissible disease. NIRC staff became aware Saturday that he was missing, due to a enclosure failure.
