Vermilion Partners With SLCC to Ensure Success of Career Fair

Lafayette, LA- Vermilion partners are rallying together with  South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) to ensure the success of the Gulf Area Campus Career Fair which is scheduled for March 18th and . Since 2015, the Vermilion Economic Development Alliance and the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce have worked with workforce and educational entities in the region to host a parish-wide job fair. This fair, typically held during Vermilion’s spring break week, aims to match local talent with local opportunities.

This year, when the two agencies noticed that the timing of SLCC’s spring career fairs conflicted with their dates, they stepped in to assist.

“As soon as I received the notification, I contacted Lynn at the Chamber,” said Economic Development Director Anne Falgout. “Our missions are to serve the business community, and companies need a way to effectively reach jobseekers. Over the years, our job fair has helped build the Vermilion Parish workforce pipeline; it’s an effective way to keep our best and brightest in the parish. So, we decided to team up and support our local campus and make their event an even bigger success.”

The Gulf Area Fair is being hosted next month on the Abbeville campus and invites all local businesses with job opportunities to participate.

“Businesses get the benefit of recruiting candidates from all of SLCC’s academic and technical programs,” adds Lynn Guillory of the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce. “And because we are helping with the outreach, our partners at SLCC will be able to connect with our local businesses in a meaningful way. Combining forces is really a win-win.”

Career fairs are an excellent opportunity for SLCC students, alumni, and community members to connect to employers in their career fields. It is also an opportunity for employers to showcase the many employment and intern opportunities they have available. Organizers will regroup later this year to determine if another hiring event is necessary but are hopeful this reimagined partnership can meet the local need.
