Vermilionville Presents an Old Time Winter Family Day Celebration

Lafayette – It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The community is invited to experience the simple warmth and beauty of Christmas past at Vermilionville Living History Museum and Folklife Park. Vermilionville brings to life the holiday traditions of yesteryear. You can catch the event from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m on Saturday, December 21st. But, wait! The fun does not end there. There is more to do on one special day in December. On Saturday, December 14th, the annual Old Time Winter Family Day Celebration will begin at 10:00 a.m. and last until 4:00 p.m. with lots more to offer. The village will be filled with great learning opportunities, live music, delicious food, Native American storytelling, arts & crafts and self-guided tours. In fact, Papa Noël (the French Santa Claus) will be here and kids will be able to write letters to him sealed with wax. Our artisans will demonstrate several holiday happenings from 1765-1890 such as how to make candles, soap, Victorian paper ornaments, citrus pomanders and more. Also, there will be a reading of The Night Before Christmas each half hour. Admission is $5 for those 4 and older. As a part of Old Time Winter Family Day, those with sensory processing differences are welcome for a Sensory Friendly Visit to Vermilionville. This initiative creates an inclusive, cultural and learning environment. The Sensory Friendly Visit will begin at 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. to allow families to tour the village before Old Time Winter Family Day begins. Once the village opens, sensory friendly accommodations will remain in place for an additional hour (11:00 a.m.). Sensory Friendly crafts will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Performance Center. Vermilionville offers special accommodations and accessories to ensure a successful visit for families. Admission is $10 per family and per-registration is encouraged but not mandatory. The Sensory Friendly Visit to Vermilionville is a partnership with The Acadiana Autism Society and The Lafayette Parish School System. To register for the Sensory Friendly portion of the day, please contact Melanie Herrington at or call 337.233.4077 x.206.
