Lafayette, La (KADN)– Hard work is rarely hard enough for for STM sophomore Izzy Carter. Her never quit attitude keeps her on the court as the Cougars backup point guard.
“The night of tryout, I found out I was on varsity and I was like now I have to get to work,” Izzy said.
The work starts at five in the morning. As soon as she got her drivers license a couple months ago, she started driving to the gym before school almost everyday. She plays pickup basketball games here too and that really impressed her basketball coach back at STM.
“Two years ago I was at Red Lerille’s working out,” STM girls basketball coach Steven Strojny said. “I went in the gym and I saw her in there battling against grown men…some guys that used to play at basketball at UL!”
“I know I have to put in work no matter what,” Izzy said. “I’ve always had that mindset and I just want to be the best I can be no matter what.”
Coach Strojny understands her energy inspires the entire team to work hard.
“You can look down the bench and her legs are shaky and she is dying to get in the game and she just takes off,” Strojny said. “The guy who does the PA for us, he nicknamed her The Wizard of Iz because she does things you don’t see all the time.”
“Keep doing what I’m doing no matter what anybody tells me too short or too tiny. I just show them what I’ve got,” Izzy said.
Izzy is only five feet tall, but her hustle and heart lift her to new heights.
